Decentralized Command

Avoiding the Fatal Funnel of Leadership

Wednesday, August 12 | 1 pm Eastern (60 Minutes)

Regular training strengthens performance. When policy and daily practice align, you reduce risk and improve readiness.

In public safety, the go-to person often becomes the one everyone depends on when things get difficult. That support can be valuable, but it can also create a hidden leadership problem: teams that wait for direction instead of building the confidence to act. Decentralized command helps leaders push ownership closer to the work, so personnel understand the mission, make sound decisions and execute under pressure.

Join Lexipol and Echelon Front for a panel discussion on decentralized command, the fourth Law of Combat, and what it takes to build teams that can lead without creating chaos. Echelon Front's Danny Ziem, along with Sergeant (Ret.) Jason Lehman and Chief Roger Schei will share real-world public safety lessons on how ego, control and good intentions can turn leaders into the “easy button,” stripping personnel of ownership and opportunity. The session will break down how leaders can communicate the why, prepare subordinates to lead, use debriefs to drive growth and build capable teams that can execute when it matters most.

You’ll learn:

  • How decentralized command helps public safety teams make sound decisions under pressure instead of waiting for direction.
  • How to recognize decision-making bottlenecks, avoid becoming the “easy button” and give personnel the clarity, intent and confidence to act.
  • How to use debriefs to turn mistakes, hesitation and missed opportunities into leadership growth.
  • How to apply Echelon Front leadership principles through ongoing public safety training.
  • The importance of empowering your team and not being the “easy button.”
