A Change in Perspective

Leading Former Peers After Promotion

Wednesday, December 2 | 1 pm Eastern (60 Minutes)

Regular training strengthens performance. When policy and daily practice align, you reduce risk and improve readiness.

Promotion brings new authority, new expectations, and a new perspective on the people and work around you. For public safety leaders, that transition can be especially challenging when the people you now supervise are the same colleagues you call friends or competed with during the promotion process.

In this installment of Lexipol's Leadership Principles webinar series, Chief (Ret.) Dave Funkhouser and Battalion Chief (Ret.) Bruce Bjorge are joined by Captain Meghan Cash and Battalion Chief Brian Goldfeder to explore the realities of supervising former peers. Drawing on personal experience and practical leadership lessons, the panel will discuss establishing credibility in a new role, understanding how relationships evolve when your role changes, and using experience and perspective to better lead and support personnel.

You’ll learn to:

  • Set clear expectations, establish credibility, and maintain consistent accountability when stepping into leadership over former peers.
  • Navigate friendships and changing relationships while maintaining fairness and accountability.
  • Be willing to have difficult conversations and address performance and behavior early.
  • Use coaching to support personnel, strengthen relationships and reinforce expectations.
  • Recognize the strengths new and younger supervisors can bring to leadership and the organization.
